Measuring Health Systems Performance in Vietnam: Results from Eight Provincial Health Systems Assessments

Dr. Tran Thi Mai Oanh, Vice Director of the HSPI; Dr. Duong Huy Luong, Deputy Head of Public Health Department, HSPI; Dr. Khuong Anh Tuan, Head of Health Service Management Department, HSPI

The Health Strategy and Policy Institute (Ministry of Health-Vietnam) recently conducted a sub-national health systems assessment in eight provinces of Vietnam with technical assistance from the Health Systems 20/20 project. The assessments provide a snapshot of how the health system is performing in the areas of governance, financing, service delivery, human resources, pharmaceuticals, and health information systems. HSPI staff will explain how results provide empirical evidence to policymakers at the provincial and national levels of the strengths and weaknesses of the provincial health care system, and offer targeted recommendations to local and national partners on specific areas for improvement. The methodology used was based on USAID’s Health Systems Assessment Approach adapted to the Vietnamese context.
